Changing People Cultural Activities take student understanding

Students at Kansas State University are looking forward to a deeper understanding of India and experience their culture, say two leaders who are working to give students more opportunities to learn about the experience of South America and Asia.

  Barry Michie, director of the international support at K-State and Bradley Shaw, co-principal investigator, said the fascination that India has undergone a change recently.

  "For example, in the 1960s and 70s, the idea of most people in India, focusing on sacred cows, Ravi Shankar, spirituality and bullock carts. But I think we have gone far beyond that point with the perceptions of students of South Asia today as a region of growing economic and political importance to the U.S. and their own lives, "said Michie.

  The university received a grant of two years of the U.S. Department of Education to improve the supply of K-State in South Asian studies.

  The title of the grant of the VI International Studies and the Program for Foreign Languages K-State will develop an interdisciplinary approach important secondary studies in South Asia and will expand faculty and student opportunities in South Asia in all schools.

  The sequence of four semester of classes in Hindi language is included in the project.

  Michie said they hope to have the school principal approved by the University of Kansas and the Board of Regents by the end of the academic year 2010-2011.

  The researchers said it is more than just the growing importance of India in world politics and economy of South Asian studies which makes a priority at K-State.

  "Today's students see it in their own interest to learn more about the world and to add some kind of international dimension to their study, it is widespread international study or a more specific region of the world. They see potential career opportunities for you - - if you choose engineering, a discipline of the humanities, journalism or any other field - and want to have a competitive advantage, "said Shaw.

  The planned secondary importance not only add the Hindi language classes, but is also designed to create 14 new or revised courses with a focus on South Asia and adds experiential programs in India and study abroad programs, joint projects, internships and volunteer opportunities for undergraduate students.

  K-State faculty in all disciplines will have the opportunity to revise their courses, travel in India and build relationships of study or research.

  "These teachers opportunities to fan out to have the effect of reaching many students graduate," said Shaw.
